Margaret Ellis

Margaret Ellis became a member of Belfast Print Workshop after discovering linocut and monoprint printmaking during covid-19 lockdown and eventually attending classes in etching with aquatint at BPW. Ellis has a background in weaving and mixed-media.

Ellis finds fascinating the correlation between the techniques of etching, which go back to aproximately 15th century—and old artefacts, particularly neolithic structures (e.g. dolmens) of which there are around 190 in Ireland, many of which are in county Down.

Ellis’ process begins with the drawing, and it is the drawing that is the key. The processes of etching, aquatint and printing takes the drawing on a journey and ultimately defines its final aesthetic.
