Prism Print International Exhibition
Prism Print International, an internationally-based volunteer-run organisation, was established in 2012 with the mission of promoting artistic exchange, collaboration, and international understanding through the realm of fine art printmaking. This creative initiative finds its origins in the remarkable international experiences of two alumni from Camberwell School of Arts & Design.
The visionary founders, John Akatsu Read and Nigel Oxley, initiated the first Prism exhibition, which featured the works of UK and Japanese printmakers at the Yanagisawa Gallery in Tokyo back in 2012. Over the course of eleven years, this voluntary organisation has flourished, boasting an impressive membership of 44 Prism artists hailing from 18 diverse countries. Their journey has led to an extensive collection of international and national exhibitions.
The exhibitions curated by Prism are steadfast in their commitment to a singular theme: 'Printmaking.' Each exhibition creates an opportunity for artists to be showcased alongside prints of the highest caliber, inviting viewers to appreciate the intricate processes, techniques, and unique perspectives encapsulated within each piece. Whether influenced by their nationality or not, the artists' individual visions are beautifully illuminated through their craft.
Curated for the Down Arts Centre by Prism Print International member Karen Daye-Hutchinson, "Prism - Down" presents an awe-inspiring collection of original prints from 44 exceptional Prism members. The artworks chosen for this pivotal exhibition are displayed as 'naked prints' – unframed originals that invite viewers to fully appreciate the intricate details of marks, colors, paper textures, and even aromas, as Nigel Oxley, the Master Printmaker, aptly describes.
Prism Print International extends their heartfelt gratitude to Denise at Down Art Centre, Newry, Mourne, and Down District Council for graciously hosting their second exhibition in the North of Ireland. Additionally, they express their appreciation to Seacourt and Belfast Print Workshop for their unwavering support in this artistic endeavor.
The "Prism - Down" exhibition offers an unparalleled glimpse into the world of printmaking, a discipline that transcends geographical and cultural borders. From the intricacies of technique to the depth of artistic expression, each piece echoes the collective vision of Prism's diverse and talented members.
As Prism Print International marks its ten-year anniversary, we cordially invite you to immerse yourself in the captivating world of international printmaking. The Down Arts Centre will host this remarkable exhibition from September 1st to September 30th, 2023. Don't miss this unique opportunity to witness the culmination of a decade's worth of artistic exchange, collaboration, and boundary-pushing creativity.
