FlaxPaper Talk with Regine Neumann

Regine Neumann's Exploration

The FlaxPaperTalk event hosted by Belfast Print Workshop offered a captivating glimpse into the creative journey of paper maker and sculptor Regine Neumann (@growing_material_for_art). Neumann's exploration hi-lights the intricate interplay between flax, paper art, and the connections between nature, creativity, and community. Gratitude is extended to the NI Linen Biennale 2023, whose pivotal support paved the way for this artistic exploration.

The journey began with the exploration of three flax varieties: Felice, Avian, and Lisette. Felice stood out for its robust fibers thriving in optimal conditions, while Avian boasted resilience and quality, reflecting in its shining fibers. Lisette, a classic variety, offered simplicity and reliable fibers. Each variety held a unique narrative, echoing tales of strength and harmony within nature.

A testament to the power of cultivation, Lisette's seeds yielded an unexpected harvest of 1.45kg from a mere 25g of initial seeds. This remarkable transformation fostered connections and a sense of community at the core of the FlaxPaperlab project.

Regine Neumann's exploration was fueled by global inspirations. Initiatives like the Linen Project from the Netherlands, Sweden's "1 Square Meter of Flax," and the pioneering Flaxland UK spurred innovation. International platforms, including the Biennale Internationale du Lin à Portneuf and the Northern Ireland Linen Biennale 2023, amplified Neumann's artistic voice.

The journey led to a network of like-minded individuals across the UK and Ireland who shared a passion for flax. Regine's Flax Map showcased growth stories, spotlighting the dedicated individuals contributing to this journey. A parallel map focused on hand papermaking, guiding participants to studios equipped with Hollander Paper Beaters.

The Flax-Paper-lab project celebrates exploration, artistry, and shared vision. The convergence of flax and paper, nature and creativity, and community and collaboration underscores the essence of this initiative. As the Northern Ireland Linen Biennale 2023 takes shape, the invitation stands to join in celebrating Regine Neumann's FlaxPaperlab journey—a journey woven with threads of creativity, connecting tangible and imaginative landscapes.
