Join us at Belfast Print Workshop for an extraordinary celebration of art and heritage as we proudly host the Linen Biennale 2023. From August 3rd to August 31st, our studio and gallery will come alive with an exhibition showcasing the intricate beauty of linen through the creative lens of talented artists.

Thursday 3rd August, 6–9pm until August 31st, 2023.

We invite you to attend our opening reception on August 3rd from 6pm to 9pm, where you can immerse yourself in the captivating world of linen artistry.

Throughout the month, we will also be featuring guest speakers and exciting demonstrations, offering you a unique opportunity to gain insights into the creative process and techniques behind this remarkable medium. Don't miss this chance to be part of the Linen Biennale 2023 and experience the fusion of art, culture, and heritage, thanks to National Lottery players and money raised for good causes.


 

Talks & Demos

Join us for a captivating talk and demonstration on the fascinating world of flax growing and its immense potential for sustainable agriculture and textile production. Step into the world of Helen Keys and Charlie Mallon, innovative farmers who have revolutionised their approach to farming by embracing nature-friendly practices and harnessing the power of flax.

 

Making handmade paper from flax or linen. Short tow, a by-product of processing retted flax into a spinnable fibre, can be made into paper pulp using a Hollander beater. In this presentation you will learn about preparing and processing flax and linen fibres to make paper pulp. We will talk about the basic equipment needed to make paper and look at various handmade sheets of flax paper, including paper from TidekettlePaper in Berwick upon Tweed (Lucy Baxandall), Pulp Paper Arts Workshop in Glasgow (Alison Newman), Paper-foundation in Burneside, Cumbria, and artist Cecilia Stephens, Portaferry. Participants will make a small paper sample to take home. If you have, please bring a cookie cutter or an empty tuna can.

 

Join us on August 16th for an enlightening presentation on the captivating history of the linen industry. Delve into the rich archives of printed materials as our expert speakers take you on a journey through time.

 

Immerse yourself in the world of linen production on August 23rd as we unveil the secrets of one of the oldest and most enduring linen companies. Step into the heart of Belfast's renowned "Linen District" and witness the remarkable journey from flax to fabric.
