BASIL BLACKSHAW

Basil Blackshaw (1932-2016) was born in Glengormley, Co. Antrim. Blackshaw graduated from Belfast College of Art in 1950. He is known for his expressionist painting of Irish country landscapes as well as his portraits of famous playwrights, poets and politicians. In 1995, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland organised a major retrospective of his work, which toured Belfast, Dublin and Cork as well as the United States. The Royal Hibernian Academy also held a major retrospective of his work in 2012 on the occasion of his eightieth birthday.
